Former Commonwealth's Attorney Wants His Job Back

A former commonwealth's attorney in the city of Charlottesville has announced he wants his job back.

Democrat Steve Deaton announced his candidacy Monday to be the city's top prosecutor.

Deaton had previously served as commonwealth's attorney from 1990 to 1994. He lost in his second primary to Dave Chapman, who has served as Charlottesville's prosecutor ever since.

Deaton says some of his areas of interest are drug-law reform and restoration of felons' rights.

He also wants the public to have more input in the criminal justice process, especially since jury trials are becoming less popular.

“People in the community have had input into their criminal justice system through the jury process,” Deaton said. “Now that's almost gone, so we need to look for some new ways to have the people involved.”

There's no word yet if current commonwealth’s attorney Dave Chapman plans to seek re-election and run in the Democratic primary scheduled for June 11.
