Student-Athlete of the Week -- Caroline Porco, Albemarle

Albemarle senior libero Caroline Porco was just named to the all-region second team. She's also a two time Commonwealth District first team honoree, but Porco's individual accomplishments have not meant as much to her as the success she and her team enjoyed this year.

"Getting to states was just such a good feeling," Porco says of the Patriots 29-2 season. "Winning the regional quarterfinal, and we knew that we were in states, which was what we wanted to do, that was such a good feeling and I think I'll always remember that."

Albemarle Volleyball Coach Mark Ragland says Porco has always strived for more than individual success. "Caroline is one of those kids who's going to do whatever she needs to to make the team successful. It's always been team first with Caroline."

As a defensive specialist for the Patriots, she didn't always get the same recognition as the hitters, but she helped lead her team to a 29-2 record this year, by doing the little things well.

"My favorite is like getting a good dig, because that really like takes the wind out of the other team and brings momentum to your team," says Porco.

She says the same teammwork that helped the Patriots win on the court translates to the classroom. Her coursework includes three AP classes this year, and she says it was manageable during the season thanks to the time spent studying on long bus rides.

"It was okay because we can help each other, because a lot of us are in the same classes, so we like help each other with homework and we understand."

Coach ragland says Porco's academic skills have helped her become a better volleyball player over the years, and he thinks they'll continue to do so.

"The way she reads the game and the way she's developed over the last two years, I think her best days are still ahead of her if she decides to play in college. She's going to make some college coach very happy when she walks onto that campus for the first time."
