Uncharted Territory for UVa Wrestling
The Virginia wrestling team has been rising up the ranks the past few seasons, culminating with its highest national ranking in program history.
The No. 11 Cavs (9-3) took runner-up honors last weekend at the Virginia Duals, marking the Cavaliers’ best finish in its 19 all-time trips to the event. They knocked off then-No. 9 Central Michigan in the semifinals.
Even with its recent success, coach Steve Garland is cautioning his team to stay focused on the next match vs. North Carolina.
"(UNC) doesn't care that we're No. 11. If we don't focus on the next match, and start worrying about the other stuff, that's when we'll fall."
Virginia is on the road at North Carolina Friday before hosting Duke Sunday.
For Garland, a former UVa wrestler, the team's recent success is a point of personal pride.
"I wrestled here. This is my school. So to see us doing well, and the kids in this room are all great kids, it's a lot of fun lately."
