Cavaliers Go Cold, Fall to No. 7 Maryland

The Virginia women's basketball team had a cold shooting night and was unable to keep pace with 7th-ranked Maryland, losing 73-44 at JPJ on Sunday.

The Cavaliers missed 16 consecutive field goals during a drought that stretched from the end of the first half and into the beginning of the second.

"I think for me it's a disappointment that we are going on our fourth game scoring in the 40's," said head coach Joanne Boyle. "I just think we played fearful. And I don't know what has changed or why all of a sudden."

Virginia shot 26 percent from the floor, and was just 3 of 19 in the second half. Ataira Franklin was the lone Cavalier to finish in double figures, finishing with 21 points.

"I mean all you can do is go out and play hard and I can't say that we did that tonight," said Franklin. "At least not for the full 40 minutes or even a whole 20 minutes. I don't know what it was tonight but it's just frustrating."

Maryland's Alyssa Thomas had 27 points and 13 rebounds for the Terrapins, who now are in sole possession of second place in the ACC. UVa falls to 15-10 overall and 7-7 in the ACC.

The 'Hoos also may have suffered another loss on Sunday. Junior Kelsey Wolfe was injured early in the first half and had to be helped off the court. She later returned to the bench with a brace on her right knee. An MRI is scheduled for Monday. Wolfe is averaging almost 10 points per game.
