Former UVa QB Rocco Headed to Richmond

Football practices at Richmond will be a family affair next season.

Former Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco is transferring to Richmond next season, a source confirmed on Monday afternoon. The Spiders' head coach is Danny Rocco, Michael's uncle.

The Richmond Times Dispatch was the first to report the news on Monday. The school confirmed Rocco's transfer in a news release late Monday afternoon.

Rocco has started 21 of Virginia's 25 games over the past two seasons, but was granted his release to seek a transfer in December. In 30 career games with the Cavaliers, Rocco completed 396-of-657 passes for 4,731 yards, with 27 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

Virginia went 11-9 in games Rocco started the past two years. As a sophomore in 2011, Rocco split time with true freshman David Watford for half the season. Last year, Rocco rotated for much of the season with sophomore Phillip Sims, who transferred from Alabama last summer.

A rising senior, Rocco will have one season of eligibility remaining at Richmond. By NCAA transfer rules, Rocco must sit out the 2013 season (juniors transferring from FBS to FCS must wait a year before playing.) The school said in its release that Rocco would apply for a waiver to play immediately.
