Pair of Central VA Field Hockey Stars Make College Choice
A pair of local field hockey stars signed on the dotted line Wednesday.
Blissie DuBose of St. Anne's-Belfield and Western Albemarle's Olivia Hajek each signed their letters of intent in ceremonies at their respective schools.
DuBose will be headed to Chapel Hill to play at North Carolina while Hajek is staying in the Commonwealth at William & Mary.
DuBose had verbally committed to the Tar Heels prior to her junior season at STAB. It was the only school she visited.
"Oh my gosh you don't know how long I've waited for this," DuBose explained. "Ever since I was a little girl I always wanted to go to Chapel Hill and I never even thought it was possible to play field hockey because I love the sport so much."
DuBose helped lead the Saints to state championships the last two seasons and will join a North Carolina team that made the National Championship game this past season.
"I'm a little bit nervous but I'm really excited because I know it's going to be a lot of hard work and a lot of dedication but I think I can do it. I'm so excited, it's the best feeling. I can't even describe it, I'm so happy."
Hajek, meanwhile, has dominated her time in the Jefferson District. She was a four year starter at Western and was voted the JD player of the year in 2010, 2011, and 2012. She was also voted All-State in those years.
"It's super-exciting. And at this point I'm still not feeling it entirely. I think once the school year is done, I'll get even an more overwhelming feeling of just like, "Wow. I'm going to college, and I'm going to play field hockey," she explained.
Hajek went on to say William & Mary was a natural fit.
"(William & Mary) was the perfect combination of academics and sports. I really liked the location and the people seemed really nice, I liked the atmosphere, all around it was really great."
