Western Albemarle's Maggie Kooken and Albemarle's Allison Huschke signed on to compete in track & field at the next level Thursday.
Kooken will be competing at Radford University while Huschke will be headed over the mountain to James Madison University.
Kooken is the reigning Region II champion in the shotput and discus. She chose the Highlanders over VCU, Randolph Macon and Coastal Carolina.
"I really like the team and the coaches and everyone's really friendly down there. They're offering me a chance to compete as a freshman and make an impact on their team and I was really excited about that," Kooken explained. "I can't wait, I can't wait to be down there and really competing."
Huschke meanwhile worked her way back from a foot injury to finish ninth in the state at last fall's cross country meet. She chose JMU over UNC-Wilmington.
"It was a little frustrating," Huschke said of her injury. "But I knew if I worked hard I could get back, and get my times back... It's a good feeling. I mean, all the work, you found out, pays off. And I'm just really excited."
