Cavs Escape Blacksburg with 21st Win

Posted: 8:54 PM Feb 21, 2012

The Virginia men's basketball team wiped out a second half deficit at Virginia Tech on Tuesday, then held on in the final seconds to beat the Hokies 61-59.

Freshman Malcolm Brogdon broke up a Virginia Tech pass with five seconds to play to seal the win for the Cavaliers, who improved to 21-6 (8-5 in the ACC). The Hokies fall to 15-13 (4-9 in the conference) with loss.

Senior Mike Scott led the Cavaliers in scoring once again this season, finishing with 20 points. Fellow senior Sammy Zeglinski scored all 13 of his points in the second half. Junior Jontel Evans also finished with 13.

Guard Erick Green led the Hokies with 19 points.

Green's jumper with 13:02 to play gave Virginia Tech a 49-42 lead. But the Hokies were then held scoreless for the next eight-and-a-half minutes, as Virginia used a 20-2 run to take and eight-point lead.

The Hokies -- aided by the fact that Virginia sophomore Akil Mitchell missed the front end of consecutive one-and-one free throw opportunities -- used an 8-2 run to get back within two points. But Dorian Finney-Smith's pass was broken up and eventually stolen by Brogdon, putting an end to the Hokies' opportunity to tie the game or take the lead.
