  Several counties in Texas do it right. They utilize "civilian volunteers" that have been deputized for the evening. You see, in Texas, there are counties that are bigger than some small states, and since the police departments are tiny due to budgetary constraints one cop has to cover hundreds of miles of roads. Enter the volunteers. Retired military, law enforcement and related field types who get deputized and follow a cop around as he does his thing. They always stay two hundred yards or so behind the police cruiser and never interfere with what the cop is doing. Here's the good part. Once the cop gets fired on or hits the ground they open up on the free range democrats and usually the smallest rifle in the car is a 7mm Remington magnum. Now this is what I call a "ride a long" program. This program got started after too many cops got killed by gangs of druggies, illegals and other groups that outgunned and won the duel with a lone cop in the middle of the night.
