Several area high school teams will begin their 2009 football schedule Friday night, but many squads will wait until next week to get underway. Two of those teams with eight days to go kicked off in a friendly scrimmage on Thursday night as Albemarle hosted Nelson.

This was a low scoring affair, as the Patriots topped the Governors, 12-7. Joey Varaksa rushed for the first score of the contest, and Hunter McCann found Andrew Frazier in the endzone for Albemarle's second touchdown to take the 12-0 lead. Nelson did not go down without a fight, as Tim Williams rushed for the Governors lone score, which rounded out the scoring for the game.

Albemarle will open its season next Friday night at Monticello, while Nelson will take on Buckingham at home. Click on the above video link to view highlights of tonight's scrimmage.
