Stabilization of the Afton Mountain slope above Interstate 64 has progressed to the point where closures of I-64 are no longer necessary.
Engineers with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) determined that the remaining soil can safely be removed without restricting traffic.
The slope stabilization project will continue with a single lane closure while the remaining soil is pushed to the bottom of the slope and trucked to a disposal area.
There will be intermittent closures of the right westbound lane between 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday for the next five weeks.
Drivers should be aware that the work may be suspended during rain or foggy conditions to ensure the safety of the personnel working on the project and motorists using the highway.
The schedule will be modified for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. As with other VDOT projects across Virginia, work on the project will be suspended from noon, Friday, May 24 through noon, Tuesday, May 28.
