Barry Bonds Headed To Court

November 16, 2007

The power behind Barry Bond's swing has been questioned for some time. And now a federal grand jury says he lied about taking performance enhancing drugs and has indicted the slugger on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice.

"This record is not tainted at all. At all. Period" said Bonds.

When Bonds broke Hank Aaron's all-time homerun record just three months ago he'd already been under federal investigation for nearly four years.

The allegations; a San Francisco company, Balco, gave performance
enhancing drugs to Bonds and some of the sports world's elite. Olympic track superstar Marion Jones and six others have already pleaded guilty.

If Bonds goes to trial on these federal charges and is convicted, he
could face up to 30 years in prison. On top of that he could lose his homerun crown.

"I think it's about time he got indicted. Obviously he's done it. So why
should he be exempt?" said one baseball fan.

"He's obviously a tremendous athlete, but I think it definitely makes his
achievements pale"

Baseball fans have mixed feelings but it may be the league's reaction that matters most. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said he takes the indictment very seriously and it's important the facts regarding steroid use in baseball be known.

The homerun king's road to the hall of fame could be blocked if he is
convicted. Argueably one of the greatest of all time, Barry bonds could now go down in history as the sports' biggest cheater.
