Central Virginia Celebrates National Adoption Month

November 18, 2007

The Central Virginia Adoption Awareness Coalition sponsored the eighth annual Inter-Agency Adoption Celebration at Monticello High School Saturday afternoon.

More than 500,000 children are in foster care in the United States. This year, about 25 children were adopted through foster care in Charlottesville and Albemarle.

Organizers tried to encourage more families to adopt.

"It doesn't take much to be a family, a lot of love, nurturing, and they've blessed us as much as they've been a blessing to us," said Gorgie North, a mother of an adopted child.

November is National Adoption Month.

Saturday's keynote speaker was Virginia's First Lady Anne Holton.
