High gas prices and heavy traffic are not enough to stop millions of us from driving home for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Bryan Peterson and his cousin are hitting the road to Charleston, South Carolina. Despite the long drive and high gas prices, they and more than 31 million Americans are choosing to drive.

"It's a lot less of a hassle than flying, going through all the check points in the airport and stuff is just ridiculous," Peterson says.

For police, patrolling the roads, it's a busy time.

Corporal Sean Hackney with the Albemarle County Police says, "We have seen an increase in traffic; people passing through the area, family, friends coming home."

Corporal Hackney says they'll have extra officers out, looking for impaired or speeding drivers and drivers not wearing a seat belt. "Even though the fuel costs are up, we are expecting more people to drive," he says.

VDOT provides a 511 service. You can call that for road conditions. But some of us are bound to hit bumper to bumper traffic.

"If somebody is being aggressive with you, pull over, let them go, it's not worth it," Hackney says.

Hackney says they'll see an increase in driving under the influence from now through the first of the year. "Don't take someone's life into your hands because you made a poor decision to drink and drive," he says.

Police say in addition to the Thanksgiving travel and the traffic on Black Friday, the UVa Virginia Tech football game Saturday will keep the roads busy.
