Commuter Rail Project to Connect Charlottesville and Washington, D.C.

People of Charlottesville could catch a commuter train to Washington, D.C. someday. A start–up service for the TransDominion Express or TDX has been proposed.

The end goal of the TDX is a service that spreads across Virginia up to DC, which commuting students and employees can use. Unfortunately, the initial route stretching between Roanoke and Washington for the start–up service has been replaced with a route stretching between Richmond and Bristol. This is a result of a regional battle. Nobody wants to be overlooked in this project.

"We shouldn't be in any regional battles here. The best thing for the state is full funding for TDX," said Meredith Richards, a member of the Governor's Commission on Rail Enhancement for the 21st Century. "Given that we don't have enough money from the state, we have to phase it in."

The start–up service would most likely be enacted in two years. Routes including Northern and Central Virginia would be added later. Governor Warner is asking the General Assembly for more rail money in his budget this session.
