Sammy Snacks... Not Just For Your Furry Friends

A black lab named Sam is the reason that Pamela Peterson started Sammy Snacks along Garrett Street near the downtown area.

"Sam was the inspiration in wanting to make sure that he had a good quality of life, says Peterson. "A lot of foods that are made out there have really poor ingredients in them."

Peterson wanted to make sure Sam was getting good, quality snacks. So with her husband's help, she developed several recipes for doggie treats.

She went from selling the snacks at a farmer's market to kicking off her own business about four years ago, believing in her healthier alternative.

"It's easier for the dog to digest. It's a cleaner source of ingredients, and they're all extremely fresh, and we don't add any preservatives or chemicals to the food or treats,” said Peterson.

The treats sold at Sammy Snacks include flavors like cran-oat and garlic cheese. They're made fresh right inside the store and are all 93 percent digestible for dogs.

And it turns out that people can also digest the snacks since they're made with all human–grade ingredients.

Sammy Snacks also carries cat treats, as well as dog and cat food, again all natural. And that's one of the main reasons why people pick it.

"I had dogs that ate other food and came down with cancer," said Sammy Snacks customer Alta Harper. "And I was hoping to prevent that in this one by not feeding him additives and unnatural things."

Apart from food, you can also buy pet beds from your own choice of fabric, accessories, and toys. Call it one-stop shopping in a business that has become a success story.

"It's amazing. It really is. I have been so fortunate in growing this business," said Peterson.
