County police say 55-year old Thomas Lee Johnson was found lying in the driveway outside his estranged wife's home around 2pm on Saturday, January 22nd.
The house was engulfed in flames and Johnson had been shot in the chest.
Albemarle county police speculate Johnson may have burnt the house down on Murrays Lane near Covesville and then shot himself.
"The gentleman was taken to UVa Emergency Center and we later served three warrants on him," said Lt.. John Teixeira of the Albemarle County Police.
Police charged Johnson with breaking and entering, aggravated assault and a violation of a court order for a previous incident at the same location.
"The warrants were from an original incident that happened on January 7 involving his estranged wife. He allegedly attacked her with an iron and choked her as well. So we have been looking for him for several weeks," said Teixeira.
Police and fire officials are continuing to investigate this incident.
