The cost of registering your car in Albemarle County is about to go up.
Wednesday the Board of Supervisors voted in favor of raising the vehicle license tax, which will go in to effect January 1st. They made the decision in order to alleviate some of the pressure on property taxes.
Board members say that while the price to get those county stickers may seem steep, it's better for residents in the long run.
"When you look at it from a percentage standpoint it does seem like a lot because we're going from like $20 to $30 in one case, which would be a fifty percent increase in that charge. But it's still only $10 a year which is lighter impact on our community than if were to add a penny or two pennies to their property tax rates" said Board of Supervisors member Ken Boyd.

The taxes keep going up and are almost what they were in New York when I left. Its about time our local politicians got real and lived withing their budget.
I'm beginning to regret moving here from Florida. Virginia is full of the most greedy politicians. If these political hacks are not adding $2000 fees to speeding tickets, they're constantly looking to raise property taxes and now the vehicle license tax. How about cutting government spending? What do we get for all these taxes? These politicians look upon us not as residences but subjects to be taxed. Are we sure this is a Commonwealth and not a Commiewealth?
I know that it feels like taxes are always going up, but compared to N. VA, this is not so bad. Service costs to the county also go up, and those are our responsibility. We need to make sure money is spent wisely, and there are breaks available to those who truly can't afford the costs. I don't mind paying a fair share. For those who disagree, do you have another, better plan? I'm willing to listen, as are many others. If we all monitor our elected officials and their decisions, and vote our beliefs, we will truly have the kind of control a democracy promises.
