Same-Sex Marriage Ban Passes Senate

gay marriages 200x120

The state Senate has overwhelmingly passed a resolution to amend the Virginia Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

The measure prevailed 30 to 10 despite passionate objections from opponents who say the measure starts Virginia down the same path of curbing individual rights and stigmatizing specific groups that Germany followed in the 1930s.

A similar bill awaits debate and a floor vote in the House of Delegates. The House also passed, on a 70–24 vote, a measure to make it difficult for same-sex couples to adopt children. Voting yes were 54 Republicans, 14 Democrats and two independents. Voting no were three Republicans and 21 Democrats.
