"I had just seen the bus like five minutes before and I just waved at everybody, " said Daniel Shutts.

Five minutes later, just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, February 9th, Shutts and his father arrived to find the same bus laying on its side near the intersection of Route 618 and 650.

They were first on the scene and immediately got out to help.

"I saw the victim up against the very front of the bus and I tried to support his neck and stop the bleeding, " said Shutts.

Rescue crews arrived minutes later to find the 18 students and their bus driver still shaken. Six students were transported by ambulance to area hospitals.

Two more students were airlifted, one to Richmond's Virginia Commonwealth Medical Center, the other was 16-year-old Thomas Cameron of Bumpass, who was taken to UVA Medical Center.

The bus was carrying the students to Louisa County High and middle school.

Witnesses say the bus lost control on Route 618, then slammed into a tree before slowing to a halt. The crash sent pieces flying everywhere.

"It really hit hard, the children's bookbags and clothes and everything were even on the road," said Anna Toomb, who lives nearby.

Police shut down both lanes of traffic for nearly three hours.

Pattie Butler, who lives across the street from the accident, had to walk home from work. She arrived to find several frightened students standing in her yard, still waiting for their parents.

"When it comes to anybody's kids, I think about my kids and it hurts me really bad to see that and I'm worried," said Butler. "I pray to God those kids are ok."

The driver of that bus, 34-year-old Lorrie Ann Batten of Mineral, was not injured.

Batten has been charged with reckless driving as a result of the crash and could still face more charges. She will remain home pending the investigation.
