"Thomas was a great big kid, like a big teddy bear," said Dr. David Jeck, Principal of Louisa County High.
Ironically, a teddy bear is what marks the spot of the bus crash that killed 16-year-old Thomas Cameron in Louisa County Wednesday, February 9th.
Cameron and 17 other students were headed to Louisa County High and middle school when the bus struck a tree and crashed into a ditch on Route 618. Eight students sustained injuries, including Cameron who died at UVA Hospital later that night.
"I tried to comfort his brother, Brian, because he was crying and didn't think his brother was going to make it," said Jon Taylor, a passenger in the bus crash.
On Thursday, students and teachers at Louisa County High remembered him with posters and signs.
"He was nice and generous, he helped people on the bus, he made people laugh," said Cameron's neighbor, Randy Wellborn.
"He was a very good student, he was in accelerated courses all semester, just a big nice kid, " said Jeck.
Thomas lived with his parents and four younger siblings. Friends say he loved to play sports, and ride his bike.
Still in shock over the news, they wonder how they'll cope without him.
"It's just going to be hard not seeing him walking down the road waving and stuff," said Wellborn. "I don't know how I'm going to get over it."
The driver of the bus, 34-year-old Lorrie Ann Batten of Mineral, has been charged with reckless driving, she will remain home pending the investigation.
Once state police complete the investigation, the evidence will be sent over to the Louisa County Commonwealth Attorney's office. So far, no additional charges have been filed.
