Fetal Pain Bill Rejected

February 17th, 2005

A Senate committee rejected legislation requiring doctors to anesthetize any fetus at least 20 weeks old before performing an abortion.

Medical experts say the bill could endanger the health of pregnant woman, who would need a general anesthesia before the painkiller could be administered to the fetus.

Testimony before the committee suggests a fetus cannot feel pain at 20 weeks.

The sponsor of the "fetal pain'' bill says administering a painkiller would not be any more complicated than a common prenatal test.

The committee rejected similar legislation last year.
