A UVA student is recovering after being shot in the leg during a robbery near the 'Corner District' this weekend.
It happened on Friday, February 18th around midnight when an armed man approached two UVA students, asking for money.
The robber shot one of the students in the shin after taking their money. The attacker is still on the loose, and local residents are voicing their reactions.
“I was shocked, I mean, it's an awful tragedy, but I still feel safe,” said one UVA student."
Chris Stewart, owner of the Pita Pit, told CBS19 and ABC16 that he isn't too worried about crime despite the recent shooting. "There aren't a lot of incidents like this, so I'm not that concerned," he said.
“It hurts when I hear of things like this, because I always think of Charlottesville as a sleepy little town isolated from crime," said Rebecca Oliver, a local mother. "This is a good reminder and wake up call saying that we have to be careful.”
Police say the suspect for the shooting is a light skinned African American male, about 5'8”. If you have any information regarding the shooting, you can call crime stoppers at 434-977-4000.
