Potts Runs as Independent
Republican State Senator Russell Potts insists he's still a Republican despite Friday's announcement that he is running for governor as an independent.
After Potts' announcement, Senate Republicans voted to ask him to resign from the party. Potts refused.
Potts is an odd man out in Virginia's overwhelmingly conservative Republican Party. He opposes abortion restrictions and has pledged to reinstate the car tax if elected governor.
University of Virginia political analyst Larry Sabato says Potts is likely to siphon more votes from Republican Jerry Kilgore than from Democrat Tim Kaine.
