The family and friends of a nine-year-old Charlottesville girl were mourning her death on Monday, January 3rd.
Tekeyah Williams was struck by a hit and run driver on New Year’s Eve and died Monday afternoon.
Tekeyah Williams was riding her new electric scooter, a Christmas present, across Carlton Avenue and Carlton Street when she was hit by 39-year-old, Derrick Tim Coger's Jeep Cherokee.
Neighbor Nicholas Piazza saw Coger hit the girl and flee the scene. Coger was spotted by police sitting in his mangled green jeep at the intersection, watching as police and emergency personnel tried to save the nine-year-old.
Williams was listed in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center through the weekend, but her family says she was taken off life support around 3 p.m. Monday.
Tekeyah's family said she was a good girl who loved her brother and sister.
Coger was released on $2,500 bond but could face up to 10 years in prison for a felony hit and run.
No word yet on whether Coger will now be charged with homicide.
