In a recent study of hospitals nationwide, the University of Virginia Medical Center was ranked one of the best major teaching hospitals in the nation.
Every year for the last 12 years Solucient ranks 100 top hospitals that demonstrate superior clinical, operational and financial performance.
This year the UVA Medical Center was honored for many reasons. The center treated sicker patients with fewer staff, yet had better patient outcomes. Also, on average, they released their patients nearly half a day earlier than peer hospitals.
But, officials said the medical center is no stranger to this honor. They have been awarded 6 times in the last 12 years.
"I think this is one indicator of how well we're serving our patients and how well we're fulfilling our mission. It's just one indicator but it's a verification that we're doing to right things right," said R. Edward Howell, the Vice President and CEO of the UVA Medical Center.
Howell said this honor given on March 1, 2005, reflects the hard work and dedication of the faculty and staff.
