Two people lost their lives in separate accidents that occurred in the county after the snowstorm on Monday, February 28th.

One fatal accident occurred on I-64 near fifth street extended, and the other on Gordonsville Road.

Virginia State Police say 28-year-old Matthew Weiss of Newport News crashed his 1992 Acura into the back of a snow plow truck on I-64 just before the 5th Street Extended exit. Weiss died at around 6:25 p.m. Monday at UVA Hospital. State Police say speed could have been a factor.

In a separate fatal crash, Albemarle Police say an Afton man died Monday night when his vehicle slid off of the road, went over a guardrail and struck a tree on Gordonsville Road at around 7 p.m. The victim, 59-year-old Clarence Bartlebaugh, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Albemarle Police say there were a total of 29 accidents Monday, and most of them did not involve significant damage or injury.
