Rise in Gas Prices Affect Area Taxis

March 8, 2005

If you're keeping track of gas prices, you may feel like you're riding a roller coaster. Officials said you won't be getting a brake at the pump anytime soon.

Analysts predict another 25 cent jump in gas prices before Memorial Day, and the national average is expected to stay well above two dollars a gallon through summer.

A local yellow cab driver, Phil Lavinus, said he feels the affects everyday. He fills up his tank several times a week with his own money. "It costs more to operate a cab when the prices keep rising." That's why Lavinus sets a limit on how much gas he'll buy for the day.

"In order to keep the overhead down I set my limit at 35 a day," said Lavinus.

As gas prices continue to go up, eventually the taxi cab's customers will be the ones effected. Officials said meter prices will be the first thing to increase. "Cost goes up, our price has got to go up," reported Lavinus.
