Nursing Home Evaluations

The Virginia Department of Social Services has begun posting information online about more than 600 licensed nursing homes in the state.

Consumers can view the state's reports on inspection information, violations of state law and actions to be taken by the facility.

Some Charlottesville nursing homes have five, even six violations on their records.

Heritage hall on Rio Road was evaluated in October of 2003 and was sited for quality care, nutrition and dietary, and pharmacy deficiencies, each a level 2 with minimal harm.

The Laurels of Charlottesville was also evaluated by the state on July 22, 2004 and sited for 6 deficiencies, but Dottie Torrey of Heritage Hall says having these situations available online leaves room for misinterpretation.

Heritage Hall has since been evaluated in November of 2004, the deficiencies dropped from 5-1.

A representative from the Laurels of Charlottesville, Randy Smith, says they fixed their minor infractions within less than a month of the state's evaluation.

"Laurel's continues to be one of the top nursing home facilities in this community," says Smith.
