David Toscano, a former Charlottesville mayor and local lawyer, has officially announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination as a state delegate. His announcement comes after long-time delegate Mitch Van Yahres said this past weekend that he will be retiring.
As a delegate, Toscano said he would focus on more economic opportunities and their ties to education in the 57th district.
"One of the things we've seen in this region over the last few years is that the good paying jobs have moved. [We've] got to create good paying jobs so that people that graduate from our high schools can stay here and get good paying jobs. That's going to be linked, I think, to the University of Virginia," he said.
Toscano will find out if he is the Democratic candidate either at a mass meeting in late May or early June, or at a primary on June 14.
The avenue has yet to be decided.
