The Jumpstart program teamed up with the Salvation Army along Ridge Street to give away books to kids in the community on Monday, January 17.

Jumpstart is a national non–profit group that pairs up college students with preschool kids in a year–long mentoring program that teaches them literacy skills. Jumpstart had over 2,000 books to distribute.

"We wanted to do a book distribution cause it's a way we can do a service event commemorating Dr. King, his legacy, the important of service to him, the importance of education to his message," said Sarah Rude of Jumpstart.

Locally, 46 UVa students are Jumpstart Corps members.
