Albemarle County Police responded to a call around 7pm Saturday night of numerous people fighting along Putt Putt Lane, near the Rio Hill apartment complex.

Officers report that between 50 and 75 people were involved in the massive fight. The crowd of people scattered in all directions when police arrived.

Police say one officer was assaulted and charges are pending further investigation.

No one was armed and no significant injuries were reported. Several juveniles were detained by police, but no arrests have been made.

Several of the people involved in the fight stated that it was a result of a recent fight that occurred at Charlottesville High School.

I was near the area on Saturday evening and later overheard a young man saying that there had been a fight and his cousin was part of it. I have been inside the mall when a fight started and all of the young people(Black and White)were running towards the fight. It made me feel very unsafe and I really try to avoid shopping there. I know that you cannot bar people from public places, but someone is really going to get hurt or killed before something is done to curtail this behaviour. If the parent(s)had to be held accountable for these "bad apples", I believe it would stop. The apples don't fall too far from the trees.

Can you say MORE gang activity? Charlottesville, you have been warned this was going to continue. The time is NOW to work together to curtail this. Quit coddling the ones involved. The problem will not just go away. Get your head out of the sand and Make this a better community.
