Governor Mark Warner praised lawmakers in both parties for passing “assisted living” legislation that he intends to sign this week.

Now, administrators at assisted living facilities must be licensed by the state's Department of Health Professionals. Staff who administer medication must be registered with the state's Board of Nursing.

Maximum penalties for infractions will increase from $500 to $10,000.
The state subsidy has also increased. Virginia will now spend about $31 per day to subsidize low-income residents in the homes.
