City Council To Consider Real Estate Taxes

March 9, 2005

The school budget that will be presented to the Charlottesville City Council for review means that one of the city's largest budget headaches may soon subside.

But any story about the city's revenues and expenditures would have to include the rapidly rising real estate taxes. Community members will be able to air your opinion of these taxes at a budget forum this Saturday, March 12th.

The city council says it is already tuned in to the problem: “Assessments on people's homes, and accordingly their taxes that they pay to the city for real estate, [have] dramatically risen in the last few years. People wanted to see if we could do something about that. I think a four cent reduction in the tax rate, the largest in at least 25 years, is a way to lower the burden on homeowners,” said David Brown, Charlottesville Mayor.
