According to police, a man walked in to the BB&T Bank on Ivy Road to cash a check on Thursday, March 24. He told the tellers he had a gun after they raised questions about the check's authenticity and refused to cash it.

A bank employee sounded an alarm that alerted police and the suspect fled the scene. He then tried to cash the check at the Virginia National Bank behind the Barracks Road Shopping Center, where police arrived shortly after he did and apprehended him.

Lt. Garry Pleasants was the first police officer to arrive and he says he "saw the suspect's car in the parking lot, but didn't' know if he was armed or not, so we quickly surrounded the bank, entered and took him in to custody."

The suspect has been charged with threatening assault of the bank employees. Police say they never found a gun.
