The skies above Charlottesville became a little more crowded recently as Northwest Airlines made its inaugural non-stop flight to Detroit, Michigan.

Northwest Airlines made the announcement, and passengers rushed to buy tickets. What's the big deal? The airline would resume non-stop flights to and from Detroit, Michigan.

The day of the inaugural flight started with all the fanfare; cake, punch, balloons, and a ribbon-cutting. Enjoying it all, were passengers while making their way to check in at the ticket counter. Among them, were the Loebs of Detroit and the Carruths of Scottsville, VA heading over to Amsterdam.

The Loebs, Carruths, and CBS 19's Venton Blandin boarded the 65 foot Saab 340 at 4:00pm with take-off at 4:06pm. After take-off and reaching speeds of 300 MPH, they passed time by reading, crocheting, and relaxing; while Venton Blandin passed time by eating pretzels.

The plane touched down in Motown about a 5:45pm, and everyone was excited.

"It was a great flight. Nice and smooth with great service," said Jeannette Carruth of Scottsville, VA.

"It was a little bumpy at the beginning, but I like riding in a smaller plane. You can really see things, and I thought it was a great flight," said Sherrie Loeb of Detroit, MI.

"It was really nice and easy," added Tom Carruth of Scottsville, VA.

Though the city is beautiful, why Detroit?

"We're looking to grow our global network, and we look into market that fits our hub structure," said Thomas Becher, with Northwest Airlines.
