The family of a toddler is comforting their child at a local hospital after being bitten by a dog.

It happened in the afternoon of Friday, April 15 in Albemarle County.

Albemarle County Police got the call from the 400 block of Wynridge Drive around 4:30pm. Their investigation revealed a German Shepard named Axle belonging to William Maupin bit the 2-year old boy in the face.

According to police, the boy is familiar with the dog, and has played with it in the past. Axle was lying on the porch being watched by Maupin's girlfriend when the attack occurred.

The boy and his mother were walking near the porch when the dog approach the boy in a friendly manner, and suddenly attacked him in the face. The dog was immediately taken under control by Maupin's girlfriend, and placed inside the house.

It appears the boy did not do anything to provoke the dog. He was rushed to Martha Jefferson Hospital to get stitches on his face.

CBS19 / ABC16 spoke with the owner of the dog, who did not want to comment. Police say charges are not expected to be filed.

"There's a no neglect with the dog, and no charges. It's an animal, and animals are unpredictable, " said Sgt. Pamela Greenwood for the Albemarle County Police Department.

Police have not said what will happen to the dog. This is the second dog attack this week. A 4-year old in Orange County was killed on April 10 by the family's Rotweiler, which was later to put to sleep.
