UVA Gets A New Look

Video will be available shortly.

April 19, 2005

The University of Virginia is making its first move in the construction of the new center for the arts this week. The $97 million center will be built at the intersection of Emmet Street, Ivy Road and University Avenue.

Construction will take place over the next five years, with the first building being torn down this week. The center will house both the UVa art museum and the performing Arts Center. University officials are calling it the new "crown jewel" of the west entrance.

"The art center then forms that spot for arrival but also for the events that will be in the arts center, bringing in both the on-campus community, the students faculty and staff, but also the surrounding community," said University Architect David Neuman.

Private donations will fund the construction of the new center and about 25 to 30 percent of the total cost has already been raised.
