Albemarle County School are talking dollars and cents.
Though a budget was approved weeks ago, it has not turned out quite the way officials had hoped. School leaders met on Thursday, April 21, to discuss it further.
During the work session, Albemarle County School Superintendent Dr. Kevin Castner, met with school board members to give his proposal for balancing a budget already approved. The approved budget is being rebalanced because of a $1.1 million shortfall.
"We're going to use one-time only expenditures rather than re-occurring expenditures. We've had to make some cuts in some positions, and thirdly, use some of our fund balance in order to meet some high-priority expenses, " said Dr. Gordon J. Walker, the Chairman of the Albemarle County School Board.
The school system is now coming up short because the county's board of supervisors approved their budget on Wednesday, April 20, which included a tax cut on real estate property. The money from the higher rated taxes would have gone to the schools.
Though they are not getting the huge funds expected, the schools' superintendent still considers their budgeting efforts a victory. It's all just a matter of re-arranging a few lawn chairs to come up with the money they did not receive.
"Next week, at our meeting, we'll be presented with a budget to vote up or down on as an action item. It will be a budget that will be balanced when it's passed, and will absorb the less money being available than what we've originally requested, " Gordon added.
The board may be able to absorb the money taken away before it was given, but were they able to see the chance of this happening from the beginning.
Gordon said, "I think our concern was if they were to go any deeper in reducing the tax rate that we would not be able to absorb the tax cuts."
The members seemed pretty optimistic, and look forward to presenting the edited budget some time next week.
