Husband Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit in Culpeper Police Shooting

May 15, 2012

The husband of the 54-year-old Culpeper woman fatally shot by a Culpeper police officer has filed a $5.35 million wrongful death lawsuit.

According to the Culpeper Star Exponent, lawyers representing Gary Cook filed the lawsuit in Culpeper Circuit Court against against Daniel W. Harmon-Wright, the officer who shot and killed his wife, Patricia Cook.

Harmon-Wright, also known as Daniel Sullivan, the Star-Exponent reports, had remained unknown until this point.

The lawsuit alleges he responded to reports of a suspicious person in a church parking lot on North East Street on Feb. 9 and spoke to Cook in an "aggressive and demanding manner."

Virginia State Police say Cook drove off with the officer's arm trapped in her vehicle's window and refused his orders to stop.

Fauquier County Commonwealth's Attorney Jim P. Fisher has been appointed as special prosecutor for the case after the Culpeper prosecutor recused himself. Fisher is seeking a special grand jury to investigate the fatal shooting.
