Bank Robbery Leads To High Speed Chase

Video will be available shortly.

A high speed chase between police and a bank robbery suspect along Interstate 64 ends in a bang. The suspect involved in the chase was taken to the Rockbridge County Jail. Thirty-one-year-old Thomas William Ablett of Virginia Beach was charged with one count of robbing a bank.

State police told CBS19/ABC16 that the car chase started around 1 p.m. Wednesday along Interstate 64 eastbound.

An Augusta County Deputy recognized the suspect’s car from a scanner call. According to police, the suspect had been involved earlier in a bank robbery in Fairfield, Virginia. The deputy tried to pull the man over, which lead to a chase. It lasted about 10 miles, reaching speeds up to 110 miles per hour. Officers tried to stop him using a spike strip, known as a stinger, but weren't able to.

"He avoided the stinger, than shortly after that he lost control, went off the side of the median, crossed over, hit an embankment and that's where he jumped out and ran on foot," said Sgt. David Cooper with the Virginia State Police.

Ablett crossed over from I-64 eastbound into the westbound lane. After the crash, a foot chased ensued into nearby woods between Ablett and the police. The chase lasted about five minutes before he was apprehended and arrested. Police have not disclosed how much money was stolen, but say most of it has been recovered.
