One of our local elementary schools received honors from the governor today for promoting healthy lifestyles in kids.
State representatives gave Walker Upper Elementary a silver award for success in the "Governor's Nutrition and Physical Activity Scorecard and Rewards" program.
Over the past two years, the school has implemented after-school nutritious cooking classes, promoted physical activity during recess, and placed healthy snacks in the cafeteria.
Walker is among the first of six schools in the state to be given the award.
"I think that it is an exciting time for us to know that the effort and hard work we put forth gives us acknowleged results," said Walk Principal James Henderson.
Governor Warner started the program in the beginning of this year to challenge Virginians to become more healthy.
