There is new support for a proposal to open a section of the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville to vehicle traffic.

The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to the mayor supporting the plan.

Construction has made it difficult for cars to park near the East end of the mall, and that has lead to sluggish sales for businesses. To alleviate the problem, some are calling for 4th or 5th street to be open to cars.

City council is expected to look into the request.
