Steer In The City

In the country, some people may be used to waking up to the sounds of a rooster. In the city, it may be something else, like the moos of a cow.

A cow that escaped from the Albemarle Stock Yard roamed the streets of Charlottesville on Thursday.

"We were riding down 6th street and I looked down towards the police station, and seen this big black object walking; it turned out to be a bull," said B.J. Davis, a father walking with his two sons.

Not just one bull was walking the streets of Charlottesville, but several.

"I thought it was interesting because I've never seen a cow on the loose before," said Trae Davis, the father's 10-year-old son.

The cattle call started around 4 a.m. Thursday morning when Charlottesville Police were told cows were roaming the city's streets. Officers from the main police department and a nearby community services branch were soon saddled up to make a run for it.

"It's just weird. I've seen a lot of things, but it's the first time I've seen a cow in the city. Bears I can understand, but a cow? No," added B.J. Davis.

Police say this is not the first time they've had to find missing cattle. Though not often, cows do break away from the Albemarle Stock Yard, and employees are needed to wrangle the steers.

For this father, it was a first.

"I just told them look it's a cow in the city," added B.J. Davis.

The first thing on his son's mind was "...to just take one glance at it, and then just go back," said Trae Davis.

Officers did not have the option, but one took a chance, by trying to tackle the cow. The cow fell over, but got on its feet again for revenge, and knocked the officer over. The officer was shaken a bit, but the cow was tranquilized by two darts.

The good news is the cow is believed to be okay, resting at the stockyard he ran away from.
