Tonight's Albemarle County School Board meeting gave the public a chance to sound off about the search for a new superintendent. People came from county-wide, and from all different types of backgrounds to tell the school board their idea of an ideal candidate.

The search for a new superintendent for Albemarle County is on. The county is looking to replace retiring Superintendent Dr. Kevin Castner. This meeting provided the public a chance to voice their wants and needs for the new superintendent.

"As we take in this criteria from the public, the school board will have a discussion about what exactly we want to put out in the description of this position," said At-Large Board Member Brian Wheeler.

People expressed a need for many different qualities for the incoming superintendent.

"One of the qualities listed in the survey does jump out and that is leadership," said parent Jon Stokes.

"A strong background in curriculum and instruction. Two, the interpersonal skills required to create a true professional learning community," said parent Anne Hutchinson.

And while talking about the future superintendent's qualities, many asked for the continuity of someone on the inside.

"We have people within our own system that continue our course of excellence and in fact I believe they could improve it with their own individual manners," said parent Charlie Tractor.

Many feel that person on the inside happens to be their own Assistant Superintendent Dr. Pam Moran.

"She incorporates every single quality [that is] on this piece of paper. How better can you keep the continuity flowing when it's somebody that's already been in the system and knows the system," said parent Stacey Walker.

This was the first of two public hearings. The next hearing will be August 30th at noon. The board hopes to have a new Superintendent in place by the end of the year.

The board expects to take input from the public up until the middle of September.
