New Issues For Older Voters

Video will be available shortly.

July 14, 2005

Voters statewide over the age of 50 have many concerns for candidates, especially surrounding healthcare.

Only 20 percent of people polled are confident with their ability to pay for their long-term care reported a survey by AARP Virginia. People were also concerned with their ability to have home-care and choices in long-term care.

"A lot of concern is about the life of social security, but more importantly, the real life of programs like Medicare and Medicaid, which are their major sources of health care," said Dr. Richard Lindsay, retired from the healthcare profession.

Twice as many people over fifty vote than those under forty, which make these key issues for the next election. The survey also showed support increasing funding for public transportation, and a split on whether property taxes are too high or just right.
