UVa Orientation Begins

Video will be available shortly.

July 18, 2005

They're here--UVa's 2005-2006 class.

You can see them all around campus carrying their orange folders and donning their name tags. The University's first of nine orientation sessions kicked off Monday.

About 3,500 students will become Cavaliers this fall.

Connie Freeman, Assistant Director of Orientation, says the sessions will introduce the first-years-to-be to both the social and academic sides of college.

"We want them to feel welcome and comfortable coming in, so part of it is just getting them together and meeting other students that are going to be in their class," she said. "But obviously another large component is getting ready academically, hearing from a dean, registering for courses so that they feel comfortable."

It is optional for parents to accompany their kids to orientation. Four thousand parents will attend the sessions this summer.

The first day of classes is August 24.
