Each year the football season brings more than 60,000 fans to games, but the game isn't the only attraction for Hoos fans. There is another attraction that brings a mighty sound and the crowd to their feet.

After more than 40 years without a marching band, there back!

The Cavalier Marching Band, a 220 member band with no music majors, is high stepping their way back into the University of Virginia's football season for 2005.

"We're just full of energy and we're ready to go," explained one band member.

"The fans are expecting an amazing show and they're going to get that," said Trumaine Jones, a first year band member.

It's only the school's second year with a marching band since the 1960's, but rain or shine the performance must go on.

"We're either going one way or the other, and we definitely don't want to go backwards," said William Pease.

William Pease is director of the Cavalier Marching Band and he said what this band has accomplished in a short time is nothing short of a miracle. He also adds how happy he feels to see the students gain the experience.

"I get the biggest thrill out of seeing the students faces and reactions.
What they feel like when the crowd responds," said Pease. "There's no better feeling to have that, the hair stands up on my arms just talking a little bit about it."

But talking isn't what this band has been doing for the past week. For nearly 12 hours a day they've endured band camp.

"It's probably some of the most fun I ever had in my life," said one band member.

"We did in 3 days this year what took us 6 days last year," said one returning member.

With less than a month before the first game, there will be many practices to come.

The first games and performance for the Cavalier Marching Band is September 3rd. The Hoos will play Western Michigan University at 6 p.m.
