Today marks the first day of school for the city and counties--but what does it take to get your child ready?

Parents and children of all ages filled the school supply aisles--all looking for similar items.

"Notebooks and spiral paperback notebooks and stuff," said high school student Liz Milligan.

"Pencils, pens and notebooks," said 4th grader Triston Beverly.

"Marble composition notebooks, glue sticks, crayons," said Erick Altamiranda--parent of a kindergartener.

"Some mechanical pencils and some paper because we don't really get school supply lists or know what we need until we get to school," said high school junior Meg Forch.

But other schools are giving out lists ahead of time--and many are stricter than last year.

"The school list here at our school is really specific. They just won't let you get pictures or spirals or anything like that--I don't know why though," said elementary school student Jessica Worsham.

No pictures and designs means more people are searching for the basic items.

"A lot of things have been empty. We haven't been able to find pink erasers," said parent Bobbie Beverly.

While many businesses are picking up, so are lines at the register.

"[It's] crowded enough that the lines to buy are quite long," Altamiranda said.

"It's been pretty crazy, but it's been ok. Most of the stores...scheduled more cashiers and stuff. You can tell there's more people on hand," said Beverly.

Despite the long lines, kids have different reasons to get excited about school.

"It's going to be really fun, we've got really good teachers this year," Worsham said.

"When you step up to a new grade it gets funner and funner. Even though it gets harder, it gets funner and funner and funner and funner," said elementary school student Matthew Baisden.

One store even said they will be bringing out Halloween goodies a little early to fill the holes from the big back-to-school rush.
