The search is over tonight for the suspects behind an Augusta County murder, just one day after the victim was found shot to death in his driveway.
Police were on the lookout for Tammie and James Almond in connection with the shooting. Although the two were found, one was found a victim, and the other, dead. This all after the murder of Cecil Redifer.
Residents of a Weyers Cave neighborhood are stilled shocked at the death of 39-year-old Redifer.
"He was a great guy. I can't believe it happened to him. I mean, he's the last person I thought it would happen to," said neighbor and family friend, Steven Rea.
He was shot Wednesday afternoon in the driveway of his home along Keezletown Road. Even more tragic, Redifer's son, Jason, was a marine from Stuarts Draft who died earlier this year fighting the war in Iraq.
"He talked to my stepdad about...when Jason died. He came over and talked to us about it. He took it bad, but he was starting to get over it," said Rea.
According to the Augusta County Sheriff's Office, Redifer's murder stemmed from an ongoing domestic situation that involved one of his co-worker's, Tammie Almond. Authorities say Almond was beaten, abducted, and threatened by her husband, James, Wednesday morning.
She was then dragged along while her husband followed Redifer home.
"Mr. Almond approached [Redifer] in the driveway. Fired twice with a high-powered rifle, striking him both times, and killing him," said Augusta County sheriff, R.D. Fisher.
The Almonds were found Thursday morning in the mountains of Camp Todd. Mrs. Almond was let go. James Almond was found dead, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He killed himself with the same rifle believed to be the murder weapon.
Although some questions as to what happened are now being answered, residents are surprised it could even happen in Weyers Cave.
"I've lived in Weyers Cave my whole life and I never expected [anything like this] to happen," said Rea.
The Augusta County Sheriff's Office says no charges are expected to be filed against Tammie Almond. She was treated for bruises and is believed to be with family now.
